For Pilots
Mt. Hawley has two self-service fuel pumps, offering both 100LL and Jet-A fuel with credit card payment. In the FBO, there is a pilot lounge with coffee and snacks. Only one instrument approach (RNAV 18) is available due to the geometry of Peoria's airspace to the south. IFR clearances can be received on the ground from Peoria Clearance Delivery on frequency 121.6. Be wary of obstructions when descending on final for runway 36, and use caution when landing on runway 18 due to the downhill slope.
Overlooking the runway, three shaded picnic tables are located next to the parking lot. Several restaurants are within walking distance, up the road to the east of the field. The nearby (5-minute walk) AmericInn by Wyndham offers a cheap overnight stay for pilots who get stuck on the ramp.
There is currently no maintenance provider on the field. At Marshall County Airport (C75), GreenWing Aviation & Welding is available with advance notice. To the south, Dan Fasking (A&P/IA) works out of Pekin (C15) and Canton (KCTK). At the Canton location, Dan is set up to paint metal airplanes. Also located in Pekin is Bohm's Aviation, where Naomi and her crew do much airframe and engine work. At the Peoria Airport (KPIA), avionics and airframe services are available from Byerly. For fabric work, Ayden Miller out of Springfield (KSPI) is available.
Flight Instruction
Flight instruction is available at Mt. Hawley Airport through Mt. Hawley Aviation, offering training in a 1978 Piper Warrior II. The Bradley Flying Association is located across town at the Greater Peoria Airport (KPIA), and club members are able to pursue flight instruction in their fleet of Cessna 172s. For tailwheel training, Blue Sky Aero in Morris, IL and Poplar Grove are excellent options. Locally, no one currently offers sport pilot instruction due to low demand and insurance rates, but EAA's Sport Pilot Academy combines online ground training with an in-person flight course in Oshkosh, WI.
Adults ages 18 and older can experience free introductory flights through EAA's Eagle Flights program. Our chapter has hosted several Flying Start events at 3MY (2023-2025), including an introductory presentation on aviation pathways and education and a short discovery flight. These events often coincide with EAA's national Learn to Fly Week initiative.
Most aviation licenses require a medical exam. An examiner is located in the FBO building on the field, Dr. Nick Reinhart. He provides 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-class medical services, in addition to EKGs and patient consultations. Other nearby options include Aaron Boyer in Peoria (309)691-1250 and Curtis Fisher in Pekin (309)347-2714. For special-issuance cases, Bruce Chien near Chicago specializes in difficult situations.
