This 1998 Zenith 601 HDS was donated to the chapter by the original purchaser. Unlike current Zenith kits, this kit is not pre-punched. All welded parts (such as the rudder pedals and fuel tanks), as well as the main wing spar riveting, were done by the factory. Sheets are mostly cut to size, and the wing ribs are formed. As received, the rudder is completed. Markings on the rudder suggest it was built first at one of the factory's workshops for builders.
This kit is for the tailwheel version. It also includes both of the optional wing tanks. Many of the aluminum panels in the kit were still in their original paper packaging and boxes, with no significant corrosion observed.
The factory still supports this model, and a phone call will confirm that all parts can be made up on request, including components for an optional tricycle gear configuration. The quote for a discarded wing panel and parts, which was deemed unairworthy after inspection, amounted to roughly $1,700. The factory also offers a firewall kit for the Rotax 912.
The kit also contains all its paper documentation. These include the original hand-drawn 1990s build plans and the computer-drawn final revision. In addition to the factory's photo guide, there are copies of factory newsletters that contain additional construction tips. Updates to the photo guides are available on the factory website. The factory purchase receipt is also included. The project's components have not been inventoried, but a factory parts list for the 601 HDS kit is available.
Our current asking price is $3,500. For reference, the current Zenith low-wing kit without firewall forward is $37,000. Contact the chapter secretary, Karl Kleimenhagen, by email (info@eaa563.org) for more details.
